Save Our Public Toilets

At the Cabinet meeting  on Wednesday 13th November

Councilors have voted to keep our sea front toilets open.  So, Holywell, Bandstand and the Pier toilets will remain open and  negotiations are ongoing to reopen Fishermen’s Green and Harbour Reach. We, (FOES), argued that Fishermen’s Green should be repaired and reopened as soon as possible and that small businesses should not be expected to operate toilet blocks.

Shockingly only four Councilors voted for the cuts, three of them had given their apologies and had not turned up for this very important meeting. Cllrs Butcher, Diplock and Williams missed the meeting. Councilors and Officers explained the financial difficulties the Council were in and wanted to avoid intervention by the Government, ( in other words bankruptcy) .

Cllr Bannister said the cuts were about finding a solution. She stated that as she had been on the Council for many years, responsible for tourism, we have seen many of our attractions close, maybe it’s time for a change.

It was reported that nineteen businesses had agreed to join the Community Toilet Scheme, which includes all the Councils buildings including the Town Hall. It will be interesting to see how many are still in the scheme in a years time.

Thanks to everyone who has taken part in our campaign to keep the toilets open.

Sadly, Councilors voted to approve the cuts to the Sovereign Centre, Grounds Maintenance, street cleaning and increased parking charges.
